Diamond
The diamond is the traditional birthstone for April. A diamond is a natural, solid form of pure carbon, and is the hardest known natural material, as well as the oldest mineral on Earth. Formed deep within the Earth's mantle under intense heat and pressure, these crystals are brought to the surface by volcanic activity.
The Greek word for diamond, "adamas," means "unconquerable," reflecting its historical association with power and invincibility. People believe diamonds grant them strength and protect them from evil.
The value of a gem diamond is determined by the "four Cs": carat (weight), cut (shape and faceting), clarity (lack of inclusions), and color. There are several more affordable alternate gemstones used in jewelry, the most popular of which is cubic zirconia, sometimes simply known as CZ.
