Ruby
Ruby is the traditional birthstone for July. Known for its vivid red color, it is actually the red variety of sapphires (corundum), colored by chromium. Rubies are a naturally fluorescent gemstone and glow under ultraviolet light.
Since ancient times, rubies have been known as a “King’s Gem”, and were often associated with wealth and power. Records suggest that even as early as 200 BCE, there was a thriving ruby trade along China’s North Silk Road. Chinese noblemen, and warriors from many other cultures, adorned their armor with rubies because they believed the gem would grant protection.
Rubies are often associated with passion, love, prosperity and power, and are thought to promote courage and self confidence.
