Emerald
Emerald is the traditional birthstone for May, and the stone for the 20th wedding anniversary. Unlike diamonds, inclusions are not considered flaws, but rather as unique identifiers, like a hallmark of authenticity. These internal features are sometimes referred to as “jardin,” or “garden” because they can resemble moss or plant foliage.
Emeralds are often cut in square or rectangular shapes because they are naturally brittle, and the cut corners enhance their strength and durability.
The emerald’s name comes from the ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus,” and its color is generally considered to be a true green, referenced when describing something of that particular hue. Ireland is fondly named the Emerald Isle, for its lush green landscapes.
Emeralds symbolize rebirth or new beginnings, and are also associated with truth and foresight.
