Cubic Zirconia
Cubic zirconia is the alternate birthstone for April - the diamond is the traditional one.
Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a lab-created material, developed in the 1970’s as a cost-effective diamond simulant. Cubic zirconia is not the same as natural diamonds or lab-grown diamonds. Diamonds are made of pure carbon, whereas CZ is the brilliant crystalline form of zirconium oxide.
Cubic zirconia is prized for its sparkle and clarity, and for its ability to mimic the look of a diamond while being available at a much lower cost. A CZ weighs more than a diamond of the same size, which is why they are typically measured using millimeters instead of carats.
It is believed that cubic zirconia is associated with improved focus and increased clarity for the wearer.
